Chef Art Smith
As the executive chef and visionary behind Southern Art and
Bourbon Bar, chef Art Smith loves the idea of bringing people together through food. It's partly what made him the success he is today.
Art Smith has received the culinary profession's highest awards and has cooked for some of the world's most famous celebrities. In 1997, Smith became the personal, day-to-day chef to Oprah Winfrey, a position that lasted ten years.
Smith is the author of four award-winning cookbooks: Back to the Table; Kitchen Life: Real Food for Real Families; and Back to the Family. He contributed recipes and cooking advice to The Spectrum, the newest book by ground-breaking cardiologist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Dean Ornish. In May 2013 his latest cookbook was released, Art Smith's Healthy Comfort, with a focus on healthy cooking and healthy living.
The menu at Southern Art is a blend of chef Art Smith’s Southern cooking heritage and a strong commitment to serving traditional classics prepared with his light, modern approach. Embracing farm-to-table and regional cooking, Smith encourages diners to celebrate comfort and health. The menu also is reflective of Smith’s own family traditions with roots deep in the South.
Several of the most enduring cocktails ever created were inspired in bars nestled in some of America’s most beautiful and historic hotels. The base of these cocktails is one of America’s oldest and most distinctive traditions, whiskey.
As Europeans immigrated to our country; they brought with them their skill in distilling grain into beer and malt liquor. These farmers, statesmen and businessmen soon discovered that barley and rye was too expensive to ship overseas and somewhat difficult to grow in the south. They also discovered thousands of uses for our native grain, corn, namely that it made delicious whiskey when expertly crafted. Over the years, these patriots, young and old, drafted rules governing their special spirit’s production methods while still allowing creativity and distinction between each distiller’s craft.
It is with all of this rich history in mind that we imagined the Bourbon Bar. We hope you will settle in and stay for a while as you sip your way through some of our carefully selected Bourbons and Craft American Whiskies or try one of our many hand-crafted signature cocktails.
